Podcast Episode Two: The Future with Funke

As you may know, we recently partnered up with the team at the ‘I Think She’s Offside’ podcast to produce a series of interviews aimed exploring conversations around BAME women in sport.

Co-presenters Fadumo Olow and Lipa Nesa describe their productions as “Two girls sharing our love for sport, general discussion and breaking or reinforcing stereotypes.”

In the second of three parts, Senior Inclusion & Diversity Manager at the FA, Funke Awoderu, spoke about the importance of having role models and mentors on your journey into a boardroom.

Get on Board Candidate Anika Leslie-Walker appointed Director of Blackburn with Darwen Healthy Living

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Get on Board candidate Anika Leslie-Walker as Director at Blackburn with Darwen Healthy Living.

Anika has significant experience within sport in the community and has worked for over a decade in education. Anika previously worked for the Bedfordshire Football Association and has worked extensively within secondary schools and further education colleges.

She is currently a lecturer at the University of Bolton, teaching sport, sociology and management. Furthermore, Anika is completing her PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University, focussing on critical moments in sport and physical education for females in educational settings. Her research interests are focused on sociological perspectives and the intersections between sport, race and gender.

Her passion for utilising sport as a force for good has been demonstrated in her voluntary work with children in Brazil from low-income communities.

“I am very excited to be appointed to the Board of Directors at Blackburn and Darwen Healthy Living, the organisation is visionary and the work they deliver in the community is commendable. I am looking forward to supporting the future work of the organisation”, said Anika.

Anika is part of RimJhim Consulting’s Get On Board Programme which is funded by Sport England. Working with Perrett Laver and a consortium of training partners, RimJhim Consulting prepares BAME women for board level positions.

“With all her immense experience of working within grassroots sport as well as her commitment to using sport as a tool for good, I know Anika will be a fantastic addition to the Board at Blackburn with Darwen Healthy Living.  The organisation is rooted in its community and this will be fundamentally important as we come through the other side of the health and wellbeing crisis we are facing. We at RimJhim Consulting are extremely proud to have supported her as a Get on Board programme participant and congratulate her on her appointment,” Rimla Akhtar MBE, founder of RimJhim Consulting.

Get On Board lasts 10-months and offers support from a high-level mentor, targeted seminars, a range of professional training and access to insider knowledge from within the sports industry.
